Constantly curious, every project provides opportunities to make discoveries and to tell a story. Reel Curious approaches video making with a combination of the extensive film-industry expertise of the various members of the team, with the vision and experience of the founder, Mel Yates (who has worked internationally for many years shooting interiors, as well as celebrity and lifestyle portraits). Each completed film is usually between one and five minutes long, and we also edit a range of social media cutdowns. Most of all, each film we deliver is to the highest quality standard – on budget, on brief and on time.
Depending on the brief, we build a team to best achieve what’s needed. Sometimes it’s just two or three of us, sometimes it ranges from pre-production to post-production, and from scriptwriter to set designer. Being able to create high quality content with a small team helps us be both efficient and cost-effective, and our à la carte approach allows you to select and tailor the disciplines needed for each particular project.
It is predicted that 82% of internet traffic will come from video streaming by 2023. If you’re not publishing video, you’ll only be targeting 18% of web users.
Video is the most powerful form of media; its ability to capture attention and engage the viewer is unique. A well-crafted video enables you to establish an emotional connection and clearly communicate your message, allowing the viewer to ‘meet you’, to build trust, to understand your approach, your brand and its values. If creating a considered, relevant and beautiful set of images, why not create a short film made to the same aesthetic quality?
Glenn is our aerial media specialist and what he doesn’t know about flying drones isn’t worth knowing. He’s a licensed PfCO operator, having flown multi-rotor hexacopter and quadcopter configurations for the best part of a decade. Glenn first worked with Mel and Reel Curious in The Maldives, and has filmed worldwide for a host of top-tier luxury resort brands as well as providing content for clients such as the BBC and Conde Nast Traveller.
Tom is an award winning sound designer, composer, and musical storyteller. He has toured the world and performed to millions observing the positive affects of sound, and has shared the stage with Mark Ronson, Lady Gaga and Kanye West. His mission is to positively benefit our well-being by rescoring the soundtrack to life with beautiful music. Informed by the neuroscience and psychology of sound to reduce stress and anxiety and improve focus, one of his many current projects is creating content for apps such as Calm.
Mel already had formidable experience as a photographer, with commercial clients from Alfred Dunhill to ZSL and editorial from Architectural Digest to Vogue, when he started making commercial videos. At Reel Curious he manages the entire filmmaking process, from the initial script meeting to overseeing the grading of the final edit... and ultimate client approval. For him, there is nothing better than taking on a new project and steering it through to completion, always with a clear intention: “This’ll be our best film yet!”
Mark works closely with Mel on almost all Reel Curious projects. With nearly 20 years experience in the TV & film industry, Mark has held positions of Creative Director at a top London advertising agency and Head of AV at a leading film post-production company. Bringing creativity, technical excellence, and a practical and commercially-minded understanding of production and post-production, Mark has worked for a wide range of high profile clients such as Vodafone, Heathrow, Microsoft, Disney and Marvel Studios.
Julian is a phenomenally experienced sound technician, and if he’s not working for the BBC or on a film in one of the 46 countries he’s worked in so far, he’s always our first choice. Julian sets the bar high and if unavailable will source another engineer that meets his standards. Great fun on the team, on a recent Reel Curious shoot in Asia when Julian left with the sound element complete there was still a couple days of B-roll filming remaining and Mel was continually responding to the question: “where’s Julian?”
